Special rules apply to the transport of sports equipment and other special baggage items.
You may transport oversize items, musical instruments and other special baggage items as long as you respect certain transport rules.
Oversize items
Any baggage item over 158 cm / 62 in (height + length + width) is considered as an oversize item.
Checked baggage
You can transport an oversize item in your checked baggage by paying an extra fee. See the Additional Baggage page to find the amount of this fee. Your baggage item must not exceed 32 kg / 70 lb in weight. Please arrive at the check-in counter 3 hours before departure for an intercontinental flight or 2 hours before departure for a flight within France or Europe (including flights between Europe and North Africa or Israel).
Hand baggage
You can transport an oversize or fragile item with prior approval from our Customer Service department. You must submit the request at least 48 hours before your flight's departure. Your baggage item will be placed on 1 or more additional seats and you must pay the fare for these seats. The weight per seat must not exceed 46 kg / 101 lb.
Freight
If your baggage item is more than 300 cm / 118 in (height + length + width) in length or 32 kg / 70 lb in weight, it must be handled by our freight service. For more information, please see the Air France Cargo website or contact our Customer Service department.

Your musical instrument is considered a standard checked baggage item. As such, its transport is included free of charge in the price of your ticket (except with Light and Basic fare tickets) as a single baggage item (or as 1 of 2 baggage items in the Business or La Première cabins).

- For musical instruments smaller than 115 cm / 45 in in size, height + length + width (guitar, violin, etc.): this is considered a standard baggage item and included in your baggage allowance.
You may not transport an additional hand baggage item.
- For musical instruments larger than 115 cm / 45 in in size, height + length + width: prior approval from our customer service department is required. You must submit your request at least 48 hours before your flight's departure. Your musical instrument will be placed on 1 or more additional seats and you must pay the fare for these seats. The weight per seat must not exceed 46 kg / 101 lb.
Please note: musical instruments should be stored in hard cases with rounded edges.

Hunting and sport rifles are regulated weapons. Transporting these items requires prior approval and written authorization from our

department. Please let us know if you plan to travel with any of these items as soon as you book your trip or at least 48 hours before your flight’s departure. You must then declare these items when you check in.

However, if you want to transport more baggage items or if you exceed the baggage allowance for your ticket, you can purchase a Baggage Option online or pay a fee for this option at the airport.

- The rifle and ammunition may be transported in the same baggage item, but must be packed in separate bags within that baggage item.
- The rifle and ammunition cannot be transported in a baggage item(s) containing other personal items.
- Ammunition must be packed in a single container (fiberboard, wood or metal box) weighing up to 5 kg / 11 lb (including container) per passenger.
- Cartridges must remain in their original packaging, and any empty spaces must be filled with stuffing material to avoid slippage during the flight.
Please note: each firearm is considered as a standard checked baggage item and is included in your baggage allowance (except for Economy Mini and Basic fare tickets). However, if you want to transport more baggage items or if you exceed the baggage allowance for your ticket, you can purchase a Baggage Option online or pay a fee for this option at the airport.
