The Frieze Art Fair comes to Los Angeles

Art lovers, do not miss this ambitious exhibition which will bring together some of the most popular avant-garde artists and galleries from Los Angeles and the entire world. After London and New York, the famous British magazine Frieze, one of the most influential in the world in the field of contemporary art, is exporting its fair to the sprawling Californian city. The first edition of Frieze Los Angeles is taking over the legendary studios of Paramount Pictures, the oldest in Hollywood. Make your way to Melrose Avenue for an immersive experience in the cosmopolitan culture of a capricious, fantastic city.

A construction especially designed for this event by the architect Kulapat Yantrasat will accommodate several influential contemporary art galleries, such as White Cube, the Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery, Pace and Kurimanzutto.

New York in the heart of Los Angeles

Frieze has asked some of the most creative artists of today, mostly based in Los Angeles, to create projects outside the traditional scope of art galleries. These established talents will install their original creations in the studios' permanent outdoor lots. Get ready to see experimental works and imposing installations springing up in the recreated streets of the Big Apple. You may feel disoriented by this exhibition which transports you to a fictional New York city in the heart of Los Angeles.

You will recognise the buildings, the neighbourhoods and the interior spaces which have been displayed thousands of times on cinema screens and in television programmes. In the middle of this disturbingly realistic urban landscape, you will probably develop a soft spot for Sarah Cain and her painted installation which winds from floor to ceiling, inside a brown sandstone building. The neighbouring apartment will immerse you in the world of Lisa Anne Auerbach. The American textile artist will be hosting personalised sessions on creativity with “a psychic art consultant”. In a typical Brooklyn block further away, Hannah Greely will amaze you with her paintings suspended on a washing line between the buildings.

A world of magical creation

This artistic ramble will inspire a wide range of emotions. Karon Davies, another local talent, will make you ponder the subject of violence in schools, through her spectacularly staged life-size sculptures. Further away, creeping out of a subway entrance and winding through the emergency exits, the fluorescent snake designed by Trulee Hall is bound to make you feel uneasy. This work worthy of a horror film will be accompanied by a hypnotic video.

On a pavement, the street sculpture by Catharine Czudei will pay tribute to the workers who bring the cinema to life, while a giant ketchup bottle stands opposite a skyscraper. Paul McCarthy, one of the most influential American artists, has produced this inflatable structure.
You return to the streets of Los Angeles totally blown away by your immersion in this magical, supernatural, sometimes surreal and hyper-realistic world.
