From Constitution Hill to Carlton Centre

Visit the vestiges of colonial South Africa on Constitution Hill before heading up to the top floor of the city's tallest building for a breath-taking 360º view of Johannesburg.

In the area of Johannesburg called Braamfontein, Constitution Hill contains a collection of modern and historical buildings. The Old Fort Prison is a former military fort that had become a prison, primarily for white prisoners; it is now a museum. The ‘Number Four' section contained more than 2,200 prisoners in a space constructed for 979 including famous ‘guests' like Nelson and Winnie Mandela, and Gandhi. Also to be found are the Constitutional Hall, a courthouse with contemporary public art and the Constitutional Court, the highest court of law in the country.

A 15-minute drive away on Commissioner Street, the Carlton Centre, with its 50 floors, can be spotted from a distance. It houses a mall and a panoramic bar, called Top of Africa, and a rooftop terrace, overlooking the city lights, that can accommodate up to 450 guests for an elegant dinner, concert, or fashion show. Be aware that visits on foot are best for the daytime as the streets empty very quickly on Constitution Hill in the late afternoon and evening.
