Le Bouchon des Filles, where women call the shots

Le Bouchon des Filles, where women call the shots

There are not just Lyon mothers in the kitchen: here we have daughters too.

At the foot of the Croix-Rousse, Isabelle and Laura have reconnected with the tradition of the Lyonnais mothers (those longstanding figures of local gastronomy, including Mère Guy, Mère Bizolon and Mère Brazier) in a bouchon established in a 18th-century house. Though the setting is still rustic, and pink on every chequered tablecloth, the food puts a lighter, more contemporary twist on classic bouchon fare.

When it comes to the starters, for example, bowls of appetisers and terrines are passed from table to table as was always traditional in these workers' bistros, while on the menu, it is hard to choose between the homemade red mullet quenelles with shellfish and crayfish sauce, pistachio sausage and potatoes, or pork steak pot-au-feu.

For dessert, you will be hard-pressed to withstand the temptation of the lime and cashew cream cheesecake or the dark chocolate ganache with candied mandarins, a Lyon pastry that no one can resist.
