Théâtre de la Criée

The National Theatre of Marseille, one of the most dynamic art centres in France.

Founded in 1981, the National Theatre of Marseille (Théâtre de la Criée) takes its name from the old fish market. Since 2011, it has been headed by the director and visual artist Macha Makeïeff, the successor to some of the greatest names in French theatre history. Its mandate is to be comprehensive, functional, and accessible to all, at any time of the day.

"I am convinced that La Criée must remain a great theatre for creation", explains Makeïeff. She takes advantage of every little space to put forward diverse creations. Behind its listed facade is the most beautiful stage in Marseille, along with 800 seats, plus 280 modular seats and a large hall. There are many spaces dedicated to the creations of young troupes and poets, visual art exhibitions, concerts, and art performances. In many ways it is the creative core of a very creative city.
